Welcome Message
By happy coincidence, our town shares a birthday with our nation: July 4th. That Hanover was founded 15 years earlier, in 1761, meant both that town residents bore witness as word of the Declaration of Independence reached them, and also that they played a role in the events that followed. Of course, the 1776 declaration itself was just a beginning.
On Independence Day in 1800, Hanover residents were reminded of those subsequent years as an 18-year-old orator was invited to address the town. Revolutionary war veterans – some present, some passed – were lauded: “For us they fought! For us they bled! For us they conquered.” The fiery eloquence for which Daniel Webster became renowned was already on full display. The future Senator, and Secretary of State under three presidents, further reflected on the promising adoption of a U.S. Constitution which set forth “the powers necessary for government, voluntarily springing from the people, their only proper origin, and directed to the public good, their only proper object.”
These traits of sacrifice – and self-government grounded in law – have been enduring hallmarks of our national, state and local government. Even as our community celebrates 250 years as a nation, and more as a town, it is worth reflecting that our work is never finished. The ideals of our forebears live on, and are realized, only insofar as we defend and embody them.
Hanover is fortunate to have so many who give so generously to our town, and in so many ways. Residents, volunteers, employees, students, and visitors to Hanover: Thank you! So much of what you do embodies the spirit and ideals of our community. We owe a huge debt of appreciation to all who have and do give of themselves for our common benefit. You are the lifeblood of our town.
It wouldn’t be a quartermillenial birthday (and the 265th for Hanover!) without some special events – some rooted in education and civic-mindedness, and some in mirth and good cheer. You will find here a slate of activities compiled and/or sponsored by the 250th planning committee, led by Hanover Parks & Recreation, for the coming year. Thank you to all of the many organizations working to make 2026 memorable, and meaningful, as we celebrate this milestone.
