Important School Election Information

Hanover voters, please note the change in the 

absentee ballot procedure.

Requests for absentee ballots for the Hanover/Dresden School District Election for registered voters residing in Hanover, NH, must now be submitted to the Hanover Town Clerk’s office.

Due to an updated NH election law (RSA 657:17-c) effective 9/30/2025, the person requesting an absentee ballot must now provide verification of their identity.

Validating photo ID for absentee ballot requests can be done in 1 of 3 ways:

1) Including a copy of the voter's photo identification with the absentee ballot application. The identification shall meet the requirements of RSA 659:13, II(a);

2) Personally presenting a qualifying photo identification, as defined in RSA 659:13, II(a), to the city or town clerk or their designee, prior to the issuance of the absentee ballot; 

OR

3) Including a notarized signature on the absentee ballot application form.

 

The absentee ballot request form may be mailed (US mail or email) or delivered in person to the Hanover Town Clerk’s office.

General information

To be eligible to register and vote in Hanover, New Hampshire, a person must be (a) 18 years of age or older on Election Day; (b) a United States Citizen; and (c) domiciled in the Town of Hanover. A domicile for voting purposes is that one place where a person, more than any other place, has established a physical presence and manifests an intent to maintain a single and continuous presence for domestic, social, and civil purposes relevant to participating in democratic self-government.

How to Register to Vote

  • Residents should visit Town Hall (41 South Main Street) Monday – Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. to register to vote.
  • You may also register same-day on Election Day at the election venue. However, we encourage you to register at Town Hall to avoid any unnecessary delays at the polling place.
  • Registrations may be made at any time of the year (except ~7 days prior to any election). 
  • NH does not allow for general voter registration by mail.

Documents Needed to Register to Vote

  • Identity State Issued Driver’s License/Non-Driving Photo ID, Passport, Dartmouth College ID, Dartmouth Health ID, other approved ID.
  • Age Driver’s License, Birth Certificate, Passport, Dartmouth College ID or other verifiable Documentation attesting to voter's age of 18 at time of next election.
  • Domicile NH DL with current Hanover Address, signed lease, a Hanover tax bill, car registration, or public utility bill, Dartmouth verification of on campus housing, other documented Hanover address.
  • Citizenship Passport, Birth Certificate, Naturalization Papers.

Party Affiliation

  • When registering to vote, the applicant is not required to affiliate with a particular political party; however, applicants may opt to register as a Democrat or a Republican .
  • If no affiliation is designated, the applicant will be registered as Undeclared on the voter checklist. 
  • In Primary Elections, voters registered as a Democrat or Republican must vote using their party's ballot. Undeclared voters may choose either party's ballot and will then be listed as affiliated with that political party.   If the voter wishes to return to Undeclared status after casting their ballot they may sign a Return to Undeclared request at the election. The voter may also change back to Undeclared any time at Town Hall during business hours, except for approximately 90 days before an upcoming Primary Election.
